January Athlete of the Month: Corey Purk

Name:   Corey Purk     Age:  32       From: Kalamazoo

How long have you been with CrossFit Torrent and what made you decide to start?

I’ve been with torrent for a year and a half. I started because I was looking to get into better shape and trying to find something that worked for me because just doing a normal Globo gym didn’t do it for me.

What do you do when you’re not at CFT?

I love sports and I’m a huge sports nerd. I know more random stats about random athletes or teams than a person probably should.

When did you realize that CrossFit is right for you?

After a few workouts. When we started using the barbell as a tool for cardio is what really piqued my interest because I had only used it to get stronger before.

What were your thoughts after your first WOD?

So my first WOD was a little different. I was the only one from my challenge group to go to the Monday morning class so it was just Brandon and me. It felt a little awkward having someone watch everything I do for an hour-long class. I think the workout was jump rope and air squats and it had me drained and sore for a few days.

What is your favorite or least favorite WOD/movement?

My favorite WOD is Diane. My favorite movements are probably a tie between shoulder press and deadlifts. If there is an overhead movement in a workout i usually try to turn it into a shoulder press if I can. My least favorite movements are anything that has to do with the box. I have short legs so it’s a struggle to get up there, plus the box likes to take my shins out everyone so often.

What is the one thing you have done at CFT that you never thought you would do?

A handstand push up, before going to Torrent I never envisioned me being inverted let alone doing a pushup out of it.

What motivates you during a tough workout?

Just knowing that it’s making me better. Also, the sense of accomplishment you get after finishing a grueling workout is tough to beat.

What’s your favorite thing about CrossFit?

What are your short term and long term goals?

Short term I want to strict press 225 (only 10 more pounds to go). Then the long term is to get better at gymnastics. I have a lot of things to get better at in this area.

How have you seen yourself change- mentally and physically since joining Torrent? What impact has CFT had on you in and out of the gym?

I have seen my confidence grow all around since joining the gym. I also think that it has made me mentally tougher being able to grind through burpee box jumps makes a lot of other things in life seem pretty easy. Physically I’m stronger, my body fat has dropped even though I weigh more now than when I started.

Do you have any advice for people just getting started at CFT?

Don’t get intimidated by the things you see and hear about CrossFit, very few people do what games athletes do. The workouts are changeable to match where you are at in your fitness journey. There is also a community of people that will help make sure you succeed in meeting your goals.
